This spring is one of patience for all gardeners.  Angels Trumpet and Plumbago have resprouted, grass is greening up, and Confederate Jasmine is producing flower buds.  Citrus trees thought dead, are sprouting above the graft.  Yet there are things that are coming up late.

We’ve seen and heard about Live Oaks dropping all their leaves at once and being totally bare for days before sprouting new leaves.  Pecans are still leafless, and we suspect that they and the Bur Oaks will stubbornly wait even longer than usual before actively growing.  They want to be absolutely sure that warm weather has returned, despite what the thermometer and your favorite meteorologist say.

Generally, palm trees are sprouting new fronds.  Please be patient and do not trim off the dead growth just yet, until the new ones have matured. While growing they need to rub against the old ones in order to elongate to their true length.  Without that constant rubbing they’ll end up stunted and twisted.   The bad news is that of all the varieties of palms planted in Houston, only a few Pygmy palms survived.

More bad news  – these freezes may have further stressed trees that were slowly recovering from Hurricane Ike.  This would be a good time to have your trees evaluated

Your sprinkler system should also be evaluated.  If you did not drain it before the freeze, and have not used it yet…you could be in for a surprise, when you do.  The freezing weather may have cracked shallowly installed pipes.   If you’re experiencing a drainage problem, we can help you solve it.

April is a month of celebrations — National Gardening Month, Arbor Day, Earth Day — and it starts off in a big way with Easter, a time for hope and renewal.
